Otavalo –

Thursday, July 8th we traveled to a town called Otavalo to give service to a small group of 1st grade schoolchildren. We piled into Dr. Zambrano’s truck and drove for about an hour and a half, arriving at about 10:30am. The teacher was very excited to see us because Dr. Zambrano had come before to help the children there. Were entered a classroom of about 20 children in their little green uniforms. They were so cute. As usual, we entertained them for a bit with Kevin’s juggling act and some songs by Dave and Lillie. After our little show, Juan (Dr. Zambrano’s son), taught the class about parasites and we proceeded to give them the bug pills followed by fluoride treatments and toothbrushes for everyone. The children enjoyed everything and before we left sang us a few of the songs that they knew. It was a lot of fun to serve these sweet children. Before heading back to Quito, we spent some time in downtown Otavalo and in the local Indian markets. We also spent some time at the amazing Cotocachi Volcano which is an active volcano. There is a huge lake in a crater of the volcano and if you take a boat out into the middle, you can look down and see bubbles rising up from the depths of the volcano. After Cotocachi, Dr. Zambrano, with his limitless energy, took us to the Quito zoo on the way home. It was another awesome day of service! We’re loving it here.
